I had a remington 870 that would puke shells out of the magazine tube at the least opportune moments. Sent it back to remington and they never fixed it. Sold it and bought a winchester 1300 and never had a problem since.
i had a 870 that i gave to my oldest son that thing will shoot a slug like a rifle 100yd 3 shots 2 inch group with open sites was the best shotgun i ever owned but do not hunt much did go deer hunting this year killed 2 in 4 trips might keep hunting deer but fishing alot more fun my 2 cents worth
is this a legit question???? 870 by all means i have nothing but bad times out of mossberg. may last got traded for a 22mag rifle even. i have 4 870s 2 1100s and a 1187 all have worked flawlessly
I'm cheap, so I got a used Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel but would prefer the Remington. Personally I don't like pump actions because after I "pump" them, my arm is too far forward to comfortably shoot.
the 500 has a weak trigger guard, the tabs like to break off after cold mornings shooting 3 inch goose/ duck shells, of course thats after being about 10 years old though, i have put 3 triggers in my 500, would not trade if for anything, the 870 has some defects in the slide.( im my opinion), i dont like how they cycle and the finish wears off the express to soon, them you have rust..i like the 500 most because it shoulders well, if you want a NICE gun, get a browning BPS.. bottom feed/bottom eject, cycle like a dream.
They're both quality guns, and neither would be a bad choice. I've owned several Mossbergs and never had a problem with them, but personally I think the Remington 870 is the finest pump gun made, I think the 870 makes the 500 look cheap and loose fitting, not to mention if you like "pretty" guns the Wingmaster is WAAAAAY better looking than any Mossberg ever made, just my .02, don't get me wrong though, the 500 is a good gun and I've bought them before just because I've gotten such great deals on 'em, bought a pistol gripped Persuader like new for $150, wasn't very fun to shoot with the pistol grip though, lol.

Yep, my 1st shotgun at age 13 was moss 500 and its still works just fine and taken countless critters and a few deer with it , but if I wouldnt have been so poor I would have gotten an 870 , which I do have 1 now , even tho my favorite is my rem 1187 which ive been using for the last 20 yrs
I have two 870's and a 500. one is a RH wingmaster with a 20inch tube with sights killed plenty of deer with it and the action is still as tight from the day i bought. the other 870 is the LH express model newer model with lam stock. remington does not make a rifled barrel for the LH guns put a hastings barrel on it, love the gun. the 500 with the 24 rifled barrel shoots well, the only problem I'm having with the gun is with the slide action bars being loose with the forearm moving too much! And you have to slam the action shut to get it to lock up and with the rem you don't.
I have always been impressed with the 870 but never owned one. My senior year of high school back in 1979 I was on my way to sioux city to buy a brand new 1100 (back before i realized i prefer pump guns) and my dad and I stopped at a little hardware store in Onawa where I bought instead a Mossberg 500 with a 32in. fixed full choke ribbed barrel. I have dragged that thing through the mud, stepped on it, it even went through a house fire. I'm still using it.
Got to this thread a little late and not much I could say that hasn't already been. I own both and haven't shot either in years but the "Wingmaster" would bring a higher resale price while the 500 would likley sell quicker. I bought the 870 for upland game where the finley figured wood and blued receiver and bbl. wouldn't have to take a beating, the 500 with syn. stock and forearm rode in the bottom of the duck boat and was packed through the mud to blinds. Both will serve you very well for years to come and with proper care can be passed down for several generations to use (providing there is no statue against it in the future).
