My wife and I hit Nickajack (TN river) this past weekend and got into some more Flatheads. The odd thing was that they were unusually small :sad2:

I have such a huge respect for Flatheads that I am happy with any size, anytime

We ended up catching 8 Flatheads total. We also had two doubles this trip  The largest fish was around 12 pounds. The smallest was somewhere around 1.5 pounds, and was the smallest I have ever caught. Most were around 8 pounds.

The other crazy thing is that we caught them deep (25'-55'). In fact, I have never caught a Flathead in over 45'! Most fish were caught on live bluegills, However, they seemed to hit the Bluegills that were starting to get sluggish (half dead). We also caught them on cutbait. My guess is that the big Flats were on more of a shallow water night bite. Anyone have any suggestions?

I know it looks like my wife caught them all... I did catch the 1.5#er :smile2:

Awesome report Marc! I'd take a day like that anyday!

Flats are more in deep water druing early spring until the getta moving and start migrating upstream. I'd stick to your same tactics until they quit biting.

Fishing shallow is more of a warmer water/summer thing. But for now, stay and thing DEEP!
