My dad and I have gone out on the mississippi a few times looking for cats but on a river that big we just dont know what to look for were used to the smaller rivers. What do we look for deep holes mid river? wing dams? logs jams? bends? and what bait is best for a big river like that with strong current.

nick were gonna need a little more info to help you out 1) where at on the mississippi are you fishing at? 2) what time of year are you talking about. 3) are you bank or boat fishing?
as far as baits you cant go wrong with shad in the upper mississippi sounds like the skip jacks are great baits when you get south far enough to hit blue cat country.

Its quite a trek from virginia to the mississippi isn't it?

Have you tried the Iowa DNR website yet?
They have a seasonal fishing report.
Right now its ice fishing but come spring they do a report weekly.
You can sign up for an e-report.
Might have to wait til spring springs.
    good luck
