ive been fishing a little down on the miss. north of the arch area.
there is a variety of channel ,flathead ,drum ,shad ,skipjack that weve
landed ,but the most often caught is small channels. real small maybe 1/3
    or 1/2 lbers.
they are worm robbing little critters and i finally fixed their wagon.
after loseing so many worms without hook ups i started useing my tiny circle hooks i use for panfish and have been nailing these alot better now.
this particular area we fish has a large amount of scrap metal garbage in the water at the edge and it is a snagfest.
there are some nice sized fish here but the dang snagging is very monotonus and costly to keep looseing and retieing every other or each cast.
i think i will drive a bit further to find a bit smoother area i need to
find a better spot but still close to the area as gas is nuts now.

You live right around the corner from me, Im stationed at Scott AFB, and live on base as well. If you are looking for some new spots I can either show you, or if I cant go out there with you then I will give you directions. The two river spots I fish all the time is the, Chain of Rocks Bridge, and the Alton lock and dam #26 area. Both of these places can be fished by boat and the bank. The reason you are catching the little guys is the bait you are using, worms for catfish is ok in ponds, lakes, but the river systems you arent going to catch any good size ones very often. I only use cut bait on the rivers, I throw out my cast net for shad and skipjack.

josh i realize the facts on the bait vs size of fish caught "to a point"

i cann catch a skipjack , cut it up into 1/2 wide steaks and set up with
a 6/0 to 8/0 circle j whatever i try and still get either hung up or the little devils hit at it .
the current will take anything large in this area and push it down river and up against the bank.
after setting for a half hour or more i try to check bait and then want to rebait it and it gets snagged.
i can use 8 oz sinker noroll, bell it doesnt matter what type and it will carry the rig down river.
im seriously thinking about drilling holes in rock and useing these on a 3 way swivel with weaker weight drop line to allow it to break away if
and when i get a fish on the hook.

the guys on the scrap barge will fish in their spare time and at lunch and all they use is night crawlers and have gotten some nice sized cats .
that is why we have been useing them more that and when we get shad or skip we will use cut bait.

you cant imagine anyone being able to use a net at this location without
    tearing or hanging it up.
the amount of snaggled metal wire and rods are insane.
i would love to find a new location .
    the chain of rocks area?
is that where everyone is snaggingwith large trebles?????
i would like to be able to get my boat in around alton but i wouldnt trust the chain of rocks area if it were to get away from mechanical problems i
would think it would be very dangerous around that area.
    i will pm you

Where do you park when you fish from the bank at both the Chain of Rocks Bridge and Alton Dam?

    dustin ,
by the looks of google earth you can park all along the riverfront by the arch .
if you pull google earth up you will see a truck with boat trailer near the riverboat casino on the stlouis side (admiral)???
as far as the chain of rocks goes looking at the google eartyh map it says chain of rocks roadwest and you have a good size lot to park in .
ive only been there once just to look and theres way too many people slingin hooks/sinkers for me.
it was interesting to see the chain of rocks though.

it all depends on the people on chain of rocks. I go all the time and there are days I am the only person there and then there are days whn there might be 20 people there. There is a large parking lot there but the road that goes down there is bumpy as sh!t

I have read that as long as you are in your boat and not tied up to the other state's shore you are fine. If you start to go up a tributary then you'll need a state license for that state.
