I took my seven year old with me a couple of nights last week, and told her that I had rigged one of my rods for her. She patiently waited for an hour or so until her rod equipped with a 8/0 circle hook began to load. I saw her expression quickly shift from "I hope something bites" to a wide eyed "it's finally my turn." In fear that she would drop one of my rods into the river if she hooked a large fish, I had her to leave the rod in it's holder and hold above the reel to fight the fish. She wrenched on the handle with every bit of strength that her 40 lbs. body could produce, and after about three or four minutes she watched as her first catfish surfaced right in front of her. It turned out to be an 8.32 lbs. flat head, and let me tell you, she now wants to go with me any chance she can. That's right another one hooked on fishing, and especially catting.
