Do you carry a gun? Number one rule. NEVER bring a knife to a gun fight! Or a big ol catfish rod or some lead sinkers for that matter. Listen to the reply of every Cop or retired law enforcement guy on this thread, they know what kind of bad guys are out there. http://www.catfish1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6188 It does not matter if you are the biggest, baddest guy out there, when 3 drunk or tweaked out bad guys show up and decide it would be fun to beat the crap out of you at gun point you are screwed and could DIE! One punch to the face and you go down on the rocks you could die or be injured for the rest of your life even if they were just having fun. I carry not because I can’t handle myself but because I have people that count on me coming home. Everyone should check on the local laws for themselves and NOT go by what someone told them. But the bottom line for me is that I would rather stand in front of a judge for a weapons charge than stand in front of someone that wanted to do me harm without a weapon. In Kansas the law states that you can carry open anytime and you can carry concealed if you are engaged in any hunting or FISHING activity. Some of your states may have similar laws check them out and don’t just go be what someone told you. The other side of this coin and just as important is “SITUATIONAL AWARNESS”. ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. If unsavory individuals show up LEAVE. It don’t matter if the fish are biting and you were there first. Many times this type of person takes awhile to get worked up (or drunk enough) before they will mess with you, so don’t give them time. As soon as you start to feel uncomfortable remove yourself from the danger zone. Many times just the presents of a gun will prevent trouble from starting. Bad guys look for weakness and a sidearm is the best way to say “don’t mess with me”. If someone is stupid enough to mess with you when they know you have a gun just think of how much more dangerous they would be if you were unarmed! The decision to carry or not to carry is a very personal one and one that each of you have to make on your own but remember it is not only you that will be affected by you decision. There are people that are counting on you to come home. If you do decide to carry, know your local laws, practice and get training and have the mindset that you will use it if necessary. The only other thing I can say is that with the economy the way it is we are going to see much more violent crime. Times are changing and as civil unrest grows and unemployment increases things are going to get worse. The “good old days” when men settled things with their fists are gone. Make this decision BEFORE you are put into a situation where you “WISH” you had a gun! God bless and be safe.
