I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of 2 Penn 500L’s. One claims to be “NIB” the other only used for snagging spoonbills. I have downloaded the schematics and owner’s manuals. What should I look for when disassembling these reels? What tips or tricks do you suggest to make my first tripto the river a smooth one? Any grease or oil ya'll prefer? This is my 1st experience with conventional reels. Only used spinning rigs up to now.
Thanks in advance for your help, Jeff

By the way, I have read the library of posts on care and maintenance of conventional, star drag, and/or Penn reels. I was just looking for common problems that may show up with these reels. Thanks, Jeff

Learn to operate, control, cast, etc, with any new reel before going fishing. With a fish on is a bad time to learn.Usually it is a losing proposition.peewee-williams

I've got a 17 acre wheat field behind my house. We'll see how many backlashes before I knock it all down. Thanks for the tip, Jeff
