I have a 18hp Johnson year 1968 and was wondering as to what type oil to use in it. Just got boat and motor and have drain the oil out of it for the winter.Didn't want to take chances not knowing anything about the motor. Oil looked good (not Milky Looking).Drained it anyway. SO WHAT TYPE DO I NEED?? Thanks in Advance.

Thats easy... you need the type for a lower unit. LOL. In all sincerity though, Wal-mart sells lower unit oil at a reasonable price. It doesn't take much of it, about a quart. But, don't go putting motor oil in the lower unit...bad for the bearings.

Hi John, you can use 80/90 wgt gear oil in a pinch, but regular lower unit oil is the best route. Later Andy

I'd use lower unit gear oil only, this is made so it will mix with water.
