Huge fish can be caught year round on the James but you have a better chance of sucess from nov. thru april.
The river is fishable from a 14' johnboat but you have to be more careful where you fish.
Almost all my big fish were caught within 5 miles of the landing and if you are out and the wind gets up you may not get to fish where you want to.
