As usual, the person I take fishing catches the fish (unless you are JSpiel, who remains a challenge).

It was cool, windy, and even raining at times, but we still had a load of fun, and Sal caught his first flathead of 2006 (7 pounds even).

If you truly love catfishing, as I do, a cold damp night on the river and a catch of one fish (released) is still a great time. Just knowing that any second your reel could scream or your rod could double over and it could be the biggest fish you've ever caught makes every minute on the water as exciting as a roller coaster ride.

Here's Sal with his fish. Sal is the one with the darker whiskers.

edit: We also gained about 5 pounds each by eating a lot of jambalaya, biscotti, & cranberry bread.

Nice flathead. By the way, about what is the average size for flatheads in your area. I'm just curious.

I guess I would say my personal average is around 10, but only because I have the nasty habit of fishing only the largest baits I can get my hands on.
It's not that I'm so good at catching big ones, but more like the smaller ones are scared of my baits.

The greatest numbers are in the 4-8# range. The 7# fish shown was a 27.5" long female, which is a good representative fish for up here. A 20 pounder is a real trophy considering our long winters, and a 30 is likely to get you in the newspaper if you blab it all over.

I'll try to attach a photo of my personal best, 42" & 32#. Still trying to top that.

Great catch Sal!!! You know how crazy I am about a flathead being landed no matter the size. Tony, we need to pad that average a little more to make it about 30 instead of twenty. ROTFLOL. Glad, you guys did some fishing together...

A hunter lies in wait, a fisherman waits & lies- but photos tell the tale.
My boat is 60" wide there where the 32 was lying.

Still, it will take me a lot of 40-50 pounders before my average reaches 30!
