I have an old 12' semi v jon boat with a 15" transom. I had a short shaft 4 hp that I've nothing but trouble with, A good friend's dad has an older evinrude 3 hp that runs great. It is a long shaft motor, besides having to watch shallow water is there any negatives to putting it on my boat. The price on the 3 hp is a steal at 45 bucks. the motor is used regularly and I've seen it run, it is very well maintained.

friend of mine has a long shaft on his 15ft boat. only gripe he has is that the majority of the time, he has to run with the motor tilted up or hits bottem a lot.

Go into the library and look at how bob paul built that jack plate and build one to get it up to where it needs to be and that won't over work the engine and will keep it off of the bottom.
