I dunno for sure lol but reading on google i know supposedly you need box cutters to even clean them. How did you accomplish this task?

well I use to always look at them as a trash fish and pitch um back but after a friend of mine finnaly talked me into trying to eat one. man they are realy good. yes the skin is like alagator tough but I use tin snips to cut that skin back. I have seen you tube videos with big gar were they use a hatchet to run up the back with. after they remove that 4 inch strip with that then just your fellet knife to trim the rest of it off. after you clean out one then you'll know its not realy bad at all. myself I only take out the back strap meat fast to get out and boneless. dave if you look back in the gar thread (not too far) I posted step by step with pics on one I cleaned out a few monts ago that was an alagator gar about 8 lbs.
