When you are looking for crappie, with your electronics, do you look for schools of shad, and if so, how can you tell if fish are feeding on that school. I have had people tell me if the school looks like a ball, fish are feedin on em, and I've had peolple say that if the school is spred out, fish are feedin. What seems the best for you?

The balloon graph works well. Catch a crappie and leave the hook in its mouth and add a little line with a balloon attached. Now just follow back to the playground.

    David,

I seldom use my graph to locate the fish themselves. In fact, I'll turn off the fish id symbols sometimes, just to concentrate on the bottom structure where they will likely be.

I'll look for structure such as fall downs, drop offs, channel beds, or any combination thereof. The depth they hold at is the only thing I might use my fish id for once I've found the structure I want to fish.

Hope this makes sense... good luck

I'm with puller, don't look for the fish on my depthfinder, look for structure. Not that they can't be found with the DF when they are under shad balls, just harder for me to fish those type crappie. Guess longline trolling is the best way to catch those free foaming fish.

    Crappie..
Look for a brushpile. And most times the crappie will be laying in it or along the bottom of it.
Best crappie will be say 6 ft from it on the bottom. Or if the brush pile is on a drop. Look toward the top of the drop for the fish.
I will see if I have any screen shots.
Also bait fish in a ball will have feeding fish. Here is a ball showing fish feeding around them. but there not crappie. There bass.

Here is a brushpile and crappie in it, and to the side of it.
