After reading a previous post I decide to try fishing on the Nothern side of 150. I put in at Long Island around 6:30 and went to Terrapin creek. By 8:00 I had landed a what I think was a 15+ lb blue. It was the nastest looking blue I've ever seen. It was practacally black with marbled grey coloring. I took a picture of it in the floor of my boat with my cell phone but it's not very clear. I turned the fish back because I don't have a live well of any sort on the boat. I also landed a nice 4 lb blue which I added to the freezer. That fish was full of eggs. I would have thought the spawn was over but I guess not. I power drifted the entire perimeter of the cove concentrating on the 30 to 14 foot water. I didn't have any other hook ups other than the 2 caught. My bait was vacuumed sealed gizzard shad. I located some big schools of bait fish on the depth finder but couldn't get anything on the sibinski rig. Those perch are not cooperating with me. Just to note I did not fish back in the creek where it narrows I fished the perimeter of the main cove catching both fish about halfway back frpom the main channel. Mac/Wylie any tips on catching perch would be greatly appreciated. Joel

I've caught a cat out of Wyliethat was about 8lbs and it was almost completely black. If not black, it was like a midnight purple/blue color. Darkest cat I've ever seen.

About your bait, the vacuumed shad, Is that the stuff you can buy at wal-mart or any other place that sales tackle? I bought the ones that have the red dye to simulate blood just to test out, but I haven't had any luck with it yet.

Joel, get you a number 8 Sabiki Rig and bait it will a small pieces of whatever bait you have. Use a one oz. slinky weigh to keep it on the bottom.
Mac, where can an individual find/buy a sabiki rig? I've heard about them and don't exactly know what they are and what they look like. Any help would be appreciated.

Each spring the gizzard shad spawn up along the wall at oxford dam. I go down there with a dip net and catch as many as I can and vacuum seal them. They average 1 to 2 lbs. They are the stinkist fish in the lake and make great bait. I also catch threadfin shad at the dam and in Gunpowder on lake hickory with a throw net for striper fishing. I usally freeze the ones I don't use or just catch some extra ones for cattin. I I haven't tried any of the prepackaged baits but I know the ones your talking about. Sometimes when I'm preparing baits I'll soak them in shad oil that I got at bass pro shop or I'll use some Kat Juice I bought online. Mac put me on to that little tip last year. I've caught fish with and without the oil.

ah ok. when I read vacuum sealed, I immediately thought of the stuff I have. It says on the package the older the bait, the better it works. But, in my opinion I don't think any fish are going to find it too appetizing. However, I have had turtles pick my hook clean of them. I ended up feeding some of them in Tillery just to prove to myself that something will in fact eat it.

Thanks for the tips man. If I had a boat I would definitely invest in a cast net. And I'll look up the shad oils and kat juice!

I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago. I caught 4 cats that had the black covering them. I was at the first island which is about 1/2 a mile from where you were. I am guessing the fish were covered from nesting.

Also when you look for sibiki rigs they normally are in the salt water tackle section of the store.

There is some REALLY good water in the back o terapin creek. Points, creeks, and a hump or two that has produced some really nice fish for me in the past.

Congrats on the nice cat. Small jigging spoons work well I hear. I think someone told me they like PINK on the perch.

Good luck out there

haha. Yeah, a sabiki rig baited with really tiny pieces of shad works well for me. Probably the reason you werent catching them is because you werent deep enough, like you said. It seems like most of the time those perch hug the bottom. But sometimes the sabiki rig is too much of a pain in the butt because of all the hooks. I cant tell you how many times ive picked hooks out of my clothes or how long ive spent untangling rods because of that damn thing. If you don't have a sabiki rig, you can make your own rig with two or three hooks on it. Just bait with really tiny piece of shad and youre in business. Good luck
