Tight Lines Are A Common Thing In Rivers And Streams Due To The Currents.

If you fish a river with any current at all you are always going to have a tight line. Even if your bait is held on the bottom and you put out slack. The current will take the slack down river. Probably will not even know you have a hit going on fishing like that. Even in lakes I like to have a tight line.

I always keep a taught line, like right before the rod starts to bend from the 2 oz sinker, then I just switch off the drag and wait untill the fish takes off with the line, this keeps me from trying to set the hook too early.
