I usually put my boat in at Benson Creek ramp. The Steel Branch ramp to get below the damn is just too narrow and curvy. I dont feel comfortable pulling my pontoon thru there. This is my first year targeting large catfish and need all the tips I can get. biggest i have ever caught has been 11 pounds.

How is the river in that area? What would be considered a big fish? If I had a deep v boat in the river would I have to be concerned?
The ramp at Benson creek is a very nice ramp. Has a curtiousy dock and its pretty well lite out there. I've seen small jon boats to b.ig 28' cruisers being launched there. The main river is a big pool. Goes all the way to lawrenceburg.

Any fish over 10 pounds is big to me but i keep hearing people say they pull 50 and 60 pound cats out of the river. Never seen one that big but they swear to it.

Don't know about that section but uphere in Madison Co. they launch pontoons deep v's lil johns etc... the MAIN THING is watch for trees in the middle of the river up here anyways...Blues have come up river as far as Frankfort for sure from what KDFWR biologists have told me so I could imagine at least some 40's in there and of coarse there are flats probably all the way from east KY to the Ohio .

this is the only section of the river I fish, I fish below and above lock 4, I like the upper pool better, but thats because I know it better. I catch blues and flats, but I dont target the flats but still manage to pull one or two off the bottom usually every trip. The fishing is great and I love it here. I put in at benson also, The blues are so abundent in this stretch of the river, thats why I only fish for them and skip the targeting of the flatheads. Its nothing to go out and catch 3 or 4 blues a night that range from 20 to 40 pnds. I will say this, I hate givn out spots but, the blue fishing is good its not hard to find a spot to catch fish, my suggestion is dont waste your time fishing back this way of the interstate bridges. so from about 300 yards this side of the interstate on up the river is all good. This year im actually looking for some spots up past mulholland cause all the boat traffic pretty much stops there. Also, the majority of my fish are cought on floats and I do mean the majority of them. I just bought a pontoon thish year so if you see someone in a pontoon with floats, thats probably me, as ive never seen anyone else fishing with them. Another tip is, I always look to set up in around 12 to 14 feet of water, any deeper and I dont catch as many fish so thats what I look for. I will tell ya a good spot that i actuallly cought alot of fish there one night and I dont fish anymore just because I choose to go further up to get away from boats but its just before the interstate on the right as your heading up river, Id say its a few hundred yards from the interstate, you will see what looks like a skinny metal fence post that sticks out of the water just off the bank, I set there one night and cought 3 blues all over 20 pnds and one flathead that weighed just over 30. I usually fish with cut bluegill or green sunfish, I would love to have some big shad but have not had any luck catching them the past couple years, I used to catch them at the benson marina with a throw net but dont like going up in there anymore. I havnt been this year yet, been working on getting the pontoon I just bought ready to fish, its ready now and will be out there friday night, maybe I will see you guys out there. good luck

another tip for ya, I bent my prop the other day when I had my boat on the water for the first time, whatever I hit, it is just about right at the mouth of benson almost under the bridge and in the center of the creek, Ive never hit anything there before but there is something there now, so I would hang the left of the creek going and coming and take it slow, I did this the other day and was fine. I even walked out on the bridge the next day to see if I could see what I hit and I didnt see anything, but there is something there, there were some guys at the ramp saying that theres been a few props bent there lately, so be careful around that spot.

One more thing, I used to have a key but dont anymore, but you can get a key from buffalo trace for the ramp on lewis ferry, it cost 50 bucks a year for the key. Its a good spot to launch, the fishing isnt bad, I just never put in the time to fish it and learn it, The best part about launching there and fishing that stretch is that it is very rare to see any boats, most people wont come up that far from steel branch, I never seen any boats the few times I fished down there.

Thanks for all your advice. I see an old man at the Benson Ramp all the time that swears he caught a 60 pound blue about where you mentioned. I hope one day I will be lucky to catch one larger than 20 pounds. Also how do I purchase a key to the lewis ferry ramp?

You can get a key from the mansion at buffalo trace, you go in the the second gate, the next road on the right past the store, if your going towards downtown, when you take that right, go down to just before the gaurd shack and take a left up the hill, its the big house on the hill, just walk in and ask somebody they will tell you how. I believe they only have 50 to hand out, but you should be able to get one, I have a buddy that works there that just told me about a certain number of keys, I wasnt aware of that before. Also if you head up towards the interstate, its the best blue fishing ive done on the river anywhere, Always catch them up there.
