Here is a question I am sure you motor guys can answer.

I have developed a knock in my outboard motor (94 Mercury 200hp) that appears to be associated with the shifting / gear / shaft assembly and not in the engine area itself. Here is the best description I can come up with:

    1) It does it after I shift into forward and begin to apply throttle
    2) It does not do it in reverse
    3) It does not do it at speed, only a couple of times as it begins to power up
    4) Engine runs fine at idle, reverse, and at speed

I am going to take it to my local mechinic, but I would like to have an educated idea of where to tell him to start. Thanks in advance for your help and expertise.

Sounds like the shift yoke in the lower unit has worn down and letting the forward gear run slightly out of mesh or it could be a shim worn out doing the same thing. I'll look up that lower unit tomorrow and look at the exploded view of it and try to dertmine something for you to go on.
