I have found that when setting the hook I lose more hookups than if I just let the fish hook itself.
I prefer to use them like a circle hook.

I use them like circles but, you can get away with a little more hook setting than circles.

I use a 9/0 King Kahle with big live bluegills and when I jerk ......I jerk hard!!!!! That gets the job done for me!!!! Never have liked the circle hooks or circle hook method while using clickers on bait casters. However if you let the rod load up and then you can just reel them in or so I've been told.

They can be used both ways from my experiences. If you tight line and the fish loads the rod hard, most times they are hooked. If the fish are light biting you can usually pick up the rod and when the fish tightens the line you can hook them by setting the hook.

I would recommend setting the hook
