Guys we used to use a number 1 hook on our trot lines. And this was doing it for a living. We caught more fish on small baits and hooks then the guys fishing big hooks.
Now a Circle hook or a Kahle or a Sickle hook will work way better on jugs or trot lines then standard J hooks.

I purchased some Catmaxx Baitholder 9/0 hooks from Bass Pro and have been having good luck with them, they are a shiny hook and even landed about a 2 pound channel without bait. these hooks are inexpensive , the cost was 5.49 for 25 hooks.

I use 4/0 or 5/0 circle hooks, but my partner uses turn-thru hooks. Hook ups seem to be even between the two.

I switched from 9/0 j hooks to 9/0 circle hooks on my juggs, much better hook up rate. And I always use a net to land the fish.

losing a few fish hee and there is part of trotlineing, you are depending on the fish setting the hook and that doesn't always happen real well, your always gonna lose some fish. But don't be discouraged thats why you have so many hooks out, percentages! also things like ger and turtles can swipe your bait and not get hooked. The hook type doesn't mean as much to me as the hooks sharpness, when I trotlined alot I had those quick release clips on my drops and switched out all hooks and baits every check then sharpened and rebaited the drops to switch out next check, that saved me more fish that different hook styles ever did.
DISREGARD: I was on the wrong post!

I love that Mammoth cave area. Debated on retiring there at one time. We use standard J hooks but we keep them razor sharp. Ive used the stainless Tru Turn hooks but the cost and availability keep us from using them alot or exclusively.
