I've never fished the James, but I saw a poll once where they almost all voted for shad. As usual I would expect shad and/or skipjack in the deep holes. Good luck.

Jason...study the board....you have an option at the bottom the page.
For instance be in "Virginia Rivers Talk" and then look at the bottom of
the page and look for Display Options that will give you a choice to go back as far as you would like on past threads. Gear up for the big boys, I use 50 lb test and 80 lb test leader, with 3-8 ounces of sinker. Many use Circle hooks
    anywhere from 6/0 to 10. Many use a 18 to 36 inch leader. I used a guide
several times. Do make sure to have big net. Bait of choice for most is shad.

Lots of info in the Library: http://www.catfish1.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38576

Buy or download a chart of the river it can get shallow in places quick.

The below link has a lot of Bluecat info from the Ohio River great site:

Do a Google for hotels in Chester, VA. Lots of hotels in Chester.
