Headed up to the James last night. My Buddy had just gotten a gill net and let me tell you that thing is worth its weight in gold.In ten minutes we had enough bait to last the night with no sweat involved. It was a slow night of fishing. I have never seen so many baitfish in my life. Everywhere we went on the river, the sonar screen was stacked up with baitfish by the hundreds. It leads me to believe that that is why the bite was slow. We ended up catching two fish, a 10 pounder and one that weighed 38 pounds. Both fish were caught using cut shad. No takers on live bluegill or white perch. Not a great night, but we didn't get skunked. Tight lines everyone.

Thanks for sharing. For me, fishing the gill net is almost as fun as fishing for the cats. Love it!!

I'm not 100% sure but I think the net size is 1 3/4" with a 3" stretch. The net belongs to my buddy so I can't be positive. Definitely gizzard shad all between 14" and 16" long.

Nice fish, thanks for the report. Nice to know there is bait around, last week it was hard for me to find some!
