Do Channel Cat turn real dark blue like that when they are spanning? I had a guy tell me that is was a blue cat. He stated that there are some Blue Cats in Indian Lake. Thanks Scott

Spawning male Channel Cats often turn very dark in color like that. Their heads swell and sometimes they'll have large bumps on it as well. That definitely looks like a spawning male channel to me. The easiest way to tell for certain is to look at the anal fin. On a channel cat the anal fin is more rounded and has fewer rays (24-29) compared to the Blue Cat which has a straighter anal fin and 30-35 rays.

Easiest way for me to tell is to look for the hump, blues usually have somewhat of a humped back, whereas channels usually have an inwardly facing arched back

Like Garret said, the only sure way to tell the two appart is the Anal fin.
