Went out last night and anchored in the canal from 8pm - 12:30 am . The action was fast and we never got a break for more than 10 minutes at any time. Probably my best 4 hours of fishing ever in the canal I would say. We ended up catching 18 blues about 240 lbs all together (21, 20, 19, 19, 17, 17, 15, 14, 12, 11 and 8 more 5-10lb each). All were caught on gizzard shad, some cut and some whole bait. We probably lost another 10 fish for various reasons. 25lb leaders just arent quite big enough when fighting fish in the stiff current coming down the canal. Everything feels about twice as heavy you while anchored in the current. Water was moving boat almost 3mph just drifting.

We bought the bait right here at Blacks Camp. However if you can catch gizzard shad I would recommend it because at $9.00 a dozen here we have been running through an average of 3 dozen a day and it adds up to a lot of money real quick. If you are coming through the town of Santee you can stop at General Store and get them for $8.00 a dozen and normally the guys dipping bait in there throw in a few extras. We bought some real small bluebacks up at Canal Lakes the other day and I dont think we caught a single fish on those so we havent bought anymore.
