DNR will close 11 parks on Nov. 1

    August 28, 2008 at 12:41 PM
    BY JEFF LAMPE
As part of a cost-saving measure, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has announced it will close 11 parks as of Nov. 1 and will lay off 39 workers.
“The sites will close their doors on Nov. 1,” said Chris McCloud, a DNR spokesman. “We knew this was a possibility at DNR. The budget the governor got was $2.1 billion underfunded.
“This is a tough day. I think it’s important to understand these are not decisions we wanted to make.”
Parks that have been slated for closing include the following:

    • Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park
    • Illini State Park near Marseilles
    • Wolf Creek State Park
    • Castle Rock State Park, Oregon
    • Lowden State Park, Oregon
    • Hidden Springs State Forest, Strasburg
    • Channahon Parkway State Park, Channahon
    • Gebhard Woods State Park, Morris
    • Kickapoo State Park, Oakwood
    • Moraine View State Park, Leroy
    • Weldon Springs State Park, Clinton
“We still have over 300 state parks and conservation areas we hope people will still enjoy,” McCloud said. “And those sites remain open free of charge.”
The 39 workers to be laid off include: 25 site technician II, 4 rangers, 3, site assistant superintendents, 1 office associate (part-time), 3 office coordinators (2 part-time, 1 full-time), 1 site security officer (IFPE union), 1 natural resource coordinator and 1 natural resource specialist.

Ya, we've been hurting for a Governor since the Day Ryan took office
Blago moving IDOT to southern IL and everybody in the state thinks its a crappy idea , Gross Sales tax anyone? That one cost us several million dollars...

Matter of fact, All of IL politicians need canned. The Dems squabble amongst themselves and with the Republicans... Meanwhile, NOTHING gets done except they all get overtime in "special session" to stand around looking smug at each other...
The IL republican party is friggen joke.. They import ALAN KEYS (LOL) in from out of state to run against Obama for senate, Judy Bar to oust Blago, etc etc. Guess IL is thin on good republicans to run for offices???

Lots of layoffs all over with more to come...

I wouldn't be surprised if this Governor is sharing a prison cell with our former Gov some day.

That is just wrong what they are doing. What is going to happen to the land these parks are on? Are they going to sell the land and make a nice little profit?

Can't remember exactly but I think the top 10 IL goverment officals live within 7 miles of each other in the city of Chicago. Lets face it with their poplation I don't see anything changing. We were in Springfield for I.G.O.D. Il gun owners day. If you ever go to one of the committee meeting you will not believe what goes on. For example a black lady reprenesative from Fox Lake IL (exclusive Chicago burb) introduced a bill because she had seen a discarded refregrator in Fox LAke that the Department of conservation should surver and clean every lake bottom in IL. Folks she was serious

Just heard yesterday, the Gov wants to eliminate all of the Conservation Police in the state and turn there duties over to the state police. I don't know what to think of that.

Actually Don this would or will be the 2nd time he has tried to slide that in......... This fella is a JOKE! but just kills me that "No one" voted for him  If it were up to Chicagovitch our state would have NO DNR, the deal with the "Local" over seeing on the deer populations and regs, is just the beginning of the end of a State run DNR office, wait and see, it will be the biggest shame in DNR across the board........ it has already gotten to the point of if someone is tresspassing on your place you may as well not call anyone, County will maybe show up, DNR, more than likely won't anytime soon, we waited for 4 1/2 hrs called 4 times, finally got a couounty officer to show up and of coures there was nothing he really could do to a tresspassing hunter. But if he gets them parks shut down, just be the beginning of "well it works well there time to get rid of these" I am lost because beside the money from tags and such, doesn't the money from uncle sam that is handed out to the states to be used for the DNR ONLY?

Wow guys! I'm not sure about everyone elses neck of the woods but having wolf creek shut down over here is a BIG deal! Wolf creek is used HEAVILY by campers/horse back riders and it has one of the best (imo) boat ramps on lake shelbyville. It is one of the few high water ramps on the lake and has been used a ton this season.

I'm curious to know how this will work. Are they closing the parks permanately or will they have them open seasonally? Will deer hunters be able to hunt them like corp ground? IT would be ashame to have these huge chunks of land sitting there not being used. Not that those A-holes up north give a crap!

So tell me, how many of those parks are north of 80? Anyone know?
