Well Im gonna let you guys in on a little secret: Im new at catfishing. Ive been fishing since I was old enough to grab a pole, but I have just always went with some worms and crickets and didn't really care what got on the end of my hook. I have been lucky and caught cats several times but never intentionally. I really want to start catching some big ones and want to set up my gear specifically for cats and adjust my tactics.

This is the rod and reel I use with 20 LB Trilene monofilament line. I use a 3/4 oz slip sinker and a 6" leader. So far i have tried dough baits and some red belly shad from Wal-Mart but havent had any luck with them yet. I have fished a small lake and off the bank of the Ohio River one time with no success. I know it will take time to really get the hang of it, but i am open to any info. you season vets can give to the new guy. Thanks in advance

Throw the Wally World shad away and get some fresh shad, skip jack, or perch. Use them whole or cut. Try to find some one in your area to fish with to learn the ropes. It just takes time. I've been cat fishing for better than 50 yrs and I still learn something every time I go.

Ask questions here on the site and you will learn a lot.

    Welcome to the BOC

Welcome to the B.O.C .Your gonna love it here.Best advice I can give you is Throw Away The Wall-Mart Shad. It's a waste of money.Get ya a net learn how to use it, catch your own bait. You won't be buying much bait after that.
Just go out enjoy nature and your day will come on the catching the bigger kitty's.Me I'm still waiting myself.

if your wanting a bait that you can buy and works good then get you some treble hooks and some chicken livers. But if your want those big ones then you need some gills for sure, cut or live thats whats gonna get em; just alot more time before reeling in and rebaiting seems like you gotta longer wait for the big ones to bite. Thats about the best advice i can give PATIENCE IS GOLDEN.
good luck bro you'll be on here with pics of monsterous fish in no time.

Welcome aboard. I learned a ton of knowledge at the first Keystone Gathering. Shad, Perch and worms is about all I use for bait anymore. Blues and Channels will hit the Shad cutbait and worms, Flatheads and larger Blues & Channels hit the Perch and whole Shad. I sometimes bait a spot or two with chum. I'll broadcast a couple quarts of soured milo or range cubes on the shallower flats near river channels in lakes and give it an hour or so before wetting a line. It draws in the baitfish and the cats follow. Best of luck to you in your quest.
