The spillway at Carlyle is a great place for catfish . Also a fun place for some hard fighting carp on dough baits and red wigglers.
For the best place I have found for Bowfin (Grennel) is just above the north end of Carlyle Lake at the old impoundments they used to flood for duck hunting. Every kind of fish from the river at flood stage gets trapped in the old channels and can not get out.
I take a boat and put in at Cox Bridge , go down river to first old pump station pocket then park and walk over levee. Any cut bait with no weight and the Bowfin and gar tear you up. Perfect place to take the grandkids and wear them out. Kids have a blast there. Gravel and concrete to stand on not much brush to hang on .
Some people walk across the old Cox Bridge to this place , it is a walk and the bridge has signs saying the bridge is closed , that's why I use a boat , but as far as the amount of fish you will have bite , I have found no other place that offers as much action from Bowfin and Gar . Suggestion , use steel leaders , these fish are tough on line.
Please leave it cleaner than you find it so it does not get shut off to all.
Good Luck and have fun whenever you can.
