For the past several years my son and I have just messed around fishing for cats on the Mississippi River. We are planning on fishing a bit more this year.

There is a ton of useful information on this site, but I had a couple of questions.

Do you have to wait until the water warms up a bit after ice out, or do you hit the water and start fishing as soon as the ice is gone?

    Thanks,

    Brian

It's too cold for my old bones, but you can fish it anytime you like, but the fishing will improve as the water warms up a little. The Mississippi is up from all the rain now, especlially south of St. Louis. Watch out for all the trees floting down river, it seems like they always want to snag on your anchor line. The shad are hard to find when the water is cold too! Good luck and stay warm.
