Help,,I have a 2001 40 hp johnson tiller w/ hydraulic assist trim. Soon after the warranty went out so did the tilt assist. I could still lower and raise the motor, but their was no assist provided. Now I cant move it. If I disconnect the cable at the end where it enters the cylinder I can pry against the piston?? and I can move it,,other wise it doesnt work. My question is ,,Is there an alternattive to this tilt assist other than replacing it with a like unit, or electric tilt? I'm basicly looking for a way to remove the cylinder and rig a way to control where the motor rests while running and while tilting it up for shallow waters. Thanks for your reply.

IT sounds to me like it lost its fluid. You may be able to find the leak and repair it . I had to put new O rings in my hydraulic lift.
