My name is Johnny and I am from Mesa. I have always been a die hard trout fisherman and never really got serious about fishing for cats. My friend suggested that we go to Roosevelt and fish one morning and although I didn't really "feel" it I agreed. He took me to a cove north of the dam and we started catching fish almost immediatley. It was fun enough but I still didn't get into it until my rod literally jumped off its rest and was headed out into the lake. I grabbed it up and instantly knew there was something large on the other end.( I figured a large carp) To make a long story short I got that fish in close enough to the bank to see that it was a cat about two feet long. I was fishing a medium action spinning rod set up for trout (6 lb. test line)and when that fish decided to go, he did. I can't get that fish off my mind. I am hoping to find out more about catfishing and it looks like I have found a good source here. Looking forward to talking with y'all.

Thank you all for the welcome. Let me start by apologizing for any confusion in the Johnny vs. Kraig name. My first name is Johnny, but I go by Kraig. I hope that you are a patient bunch of fellers because I have a bunch of questions. I have looked over the site and already found a ton of info that I was looking for. What I would like to ask first is what kind of gear do you reccomend for big cats as far as rod (length, action, etc.), line, reel, etc. I'm telling you man, I think that I have found a brand new pursuit here!

Hey Man, Welcom to the BOC...
Roosivelt is a great lake to try for some big cats... I know plenty of folks whom could attest to that...

** There is way too much info on flatheads outhere which may seem overwelming. So the readers digest version of flathead fishing is. Fish at night with live bait with heavy takle and go from there. Some people prefer rivers, myself, I like to fish the main lake areas..

~ We are coming up on Fall which is a great time to catch a big one...

    ~ GOOD LUCK!

Welcome brother, i'm new as well and "was" an avid trouter, like yourself
i latched into a big cat and can't stop thinking about it. These are a great bunch of people, very friendly. As far as tackle, i use a 7 foot med/heavy
action spinning set up with 25# mono. big circle hooks and enough lead
to hold a heavy bait on the bottom. Can't wait to see some pics.
    GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for all of the replies. I worked some heavy overtime last week and went to Bass Pro shop today and geared myself up. I can't wait until this coming weekend to go give it a try. Looks like I'll try Lake Roosevelt, and I have been told to try the Upper Salt River where it comes into the lake. Any of you 'Zona fellers have any input on this location?
