My 5 yr old daughter came home from school the other day with a pencil point broke off in the palm of her hand, I can take a needle and scrape the skin away but as soon as I touch the lead ( I know is really graphite..) she screams bloody murder.. Is there anything I can rub on the spot to numb it long enough for me to get the little scrapper out?? thanks!

I have had two pieces (one in my leg and one in my finger since I was about 6. They have never (except when they wound up there, LOL) caused me any trouble and most likely never will.
I don't think she will suffer any ill efects from it if you just leave it alone!

Wow i thought i was the only special person that ever got stuck with a pencil and had the lead (graphite) still stick in me. I got stuck in 3rd grade and i still to this day have that piece of lead stuck in my chest about three inches below the top of my sternum. Never causes any problems and i plan to leave it there until it does.

Just ice it down, let her hold your other hand while you pull it out and get it over with fast.

First off, sorry she had this happen and I hope she is not in any pain or discomfort from it.
Like posted already give the ice a try and also mention she may have to go to the dreaded doctor if she don't let you try.:sad2: I am not doctor but you might try a little Ambosol to numb it up. It might burn a little and i don't know if it will work on her hand and that deep down. I have used it to get small splinters out. My kids swear it did not help one bit. Just be sure you sterilize very well, you would not want it to get infected.
I also have a piece in the palm of my hand and one in my leg. Like Dreadnaught said after the fact I have not had any issues with them causing me any problems or pain. I have had them for over 30 years. My older brother gave them to me as an early present in life.:sad2::angry::big_smile:

    I hope this helped,
    David

    OUCH !!! i sympathize with her !!!
i had just sharpened 4 pencils and was walking back to my desk (with the points in the palm of my hand:embarassed:)when another kid stepped in front of me going to her desk before the bell rang and they ran into my palm and broke off . i think i got some out but it left a permanent scar for years .
i dont see them now over 30 years later but i just know they caused me to hate school and homework cause i never did good in school after that:roll_eyes: .
i hope you can either get them out or let a doctor get them out if its an option .
good luck , my kids wouldn't even let me pull a tooth of theirs after i pulled the wrong one a couple of times..................sissies

There is a product called EMLA CREAM. It is available at the drug store and my wife uses it a lot at the hospital to numb the skin of kids before she puts IV's in if the kid is scared. When it's out be sure to use plenty of triple antibiotic cream and it should be OK...W

I dont know who hasn't got a pencil lead broke off in them from early school years. Can't remember what grade I was in when a girl stuck me in the shoulder. I think it was 2nd or 3rd grade. Over 40 years later, I still have a dark mark in that spot. Course it has moved a little from me growing. never has bothered me after it healed up from when it first happen. Had one in my hand but the spot is gone now.

I guess the ice would work. It does numb it out for a few minutes. Doctor would be best. Course that will probably cost $500.

    Hope it comes out ok.

    bwhupp,
I hope you are attempting to be funny with that post. I don't ever want to see a child in pain and or hurting for any reason. My child or not.

    That is not right...

I would also give anbesol (sp?) a try, you know the stuff you put on your babies gums when they are teething. Might work.

I'm with most of the other's, I've got one in the stomach and one in the shoulder. They have been there for about 35 years with no ill effects. Quite a few other's running around with some of my pencil lead in them:smile2:. We didn't have computer games growing up so pencil fights were just one way to entertain a bunch of hillbilly kids:eek:oooh::smile2:.

pretty sure he was foolin around no one wants a child to be in pain
and when i read that i said to my self RRIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGHHHHHHTTTTT
who could stand to hear a little girl screaming bloody murder while your trying to dig a splinter or lead out????
i'd need a tranqualizer dart to calm my nerves LOL
i thought it was funny .
on a serious note my oldest boy shot himself in the hand with a co2 pistol
i could feel the darn BB and it was very tempting to get a razor knife out and
get that bugger out . well i tried to for a little bit and after seeing his face
and not getting anywhere fast we went to the ER
    it was a 1K bb baby .
they wouldn't take it out in ER we had to go to hand specialist and he did it in his office . i was lectured and prodded with questions .
happened while wife and i were both at work , he didn't let me know till
about 7-8 pm after we had allready been home a few hours .
he was scared we would be mad :smile2:
he didn't see those bb guns for about a year after that MOMMA wasnt
playin games on that one .
and i was in as much trouble or more because i got it for him !!!!

I wasn't being completely serious there... I am a teacher mate. I am a child's abuser.. making them do things they don't want to do :smile2: (again.. a joke)

But really... it needs to be taken out. Ice her down and work fast to get that out. Having an infection would be worse than the momentary pain popping the baby out.

Theyre like fish hooks. You have to push them through to get them out!! JK. I hope she's ok. Could be worse, you could be chasing her around with a bottle of mecurichrome to use the plastic stick it comes with to apply to a brush burn. The treatment hurts worse then the injury.

    Brian,
Sorry I took you comments the wrong way. I sent you a PM.
It is hard to read the emotion in someones words when they are typed and not spoken.

    Keith,
How is your little girl? Were you able to remove it?

    Thanks
    David

No need to appologize.. it was my fault bro. It is good to see some folks still care about kids enough to stick up for them when others do not.

    Reps for that.
