or is there such a thing as too many rod and reels? i got to thinking, on another thread riverratsc said he has 16 ugly stiks......i have 23 rod and reel setups, with 3 of them antiques that do not get used, and the wife uses 4 they all had a purpose when i bought them, and still do...but that sounds like a too many when you say "i have over 20 fishing poles" about it, folks - what number of poles are each of you comfortable with?

well phil im with u i read this post and went and counted i currently have
8 surf rods ranging from 11ft-12ft nite sticks and abu's
    4 ultralights
and 16 basic 6ft6 -7ft rods with assortment of baitcasting and spinning reels on them.
and oh yeah its getting close to end of season and that means wal mart will be doing the big ole clearance of fishing supplies and rods and reels so im sure ill add a few more when the time comes. the finace is not crazy about it but someday she will understand if one of them break i will have one to back it up with lol.

Its a disease. Even though in most waters there is a limit as to the amount ya can use ya still gotta have more. LOL! There is no such thing as too many.

i dont have as many as you Phil ....

but i feel its your right to have as many as you want ...

I have 8 rods that are mine or i share with my nephews
my nephews use the spincasters of which there are 5
    (1 zebco rhino , 1 dawia , and 2 berkley ... and an older
zebco that was mine when i was there age)

I have 2 Bass rods ... I know i said the B word and im
not ashamed of it .... when you fish for food and fun
and live in the North you fish for what bites and what there
is the most of and thats Bass ... one rod is an old Johnson
the other is a Shimano FX quik caster both of these
will also handle a bigger fish they are MH action and they
have 14 lb test line on them ...

I have one Shakespeare Ulgy Sitk "Tiger" with 12 lb test
that i use for channels .... and when i try to get Walleye

I will have one more rod for the family when the rod I
bid on comes but this will be my first baitcaster .... the
rest are spincasters or spinning ....

I didnt count them but I also have like 6 Ice jigging poles

so you can see I have a rod for different season and different fish
which I feel they are needed ...

so in closing i would like to conclude that one can not have too
many fishing rods .... if i were married (which im not) things
might be different thou .... lol

I would like to add that I normaly carry 4 rods
    when i go fishing ....

2 for my nephews to use ...
    1 for me ....
and 1 for backup in case if
any of the other 3 break ...
so if we have a breakdown
    we can keep fishing ....

I do agree with George .... its a disease ... you maybe limited
to how many poles you can fish at one time ... but you can
    never have enough ...

I have 27 total from ultralights on up to my heavy outfits for flatheads. I don't think it's too many. I try at least once a year to get someone who has never fished before out on the water to experience it and the extra tackle comes in handy.

I think fishing poles are like hunting rifles, you can never have to many. I have rods for cats, for crappie, for bass, for the surf, for blue water, etc just like I have guns for deer, squirrel, ducks, geese, skeet, etc.

If they start falling out of the bed of your pickup on the way to the fishing hole, then you have too many. lol

In total I have 24 rods, and 14 reels.

Most of the rods are backup's of rods I normaly use, in case one gets broke.

I always bring 4 for catfish and 1 for catching bait - and for bass when the cats are biting . Plus i might bring an extra reel just in case one breaks down .

8 baitcasters from 5000's to 6500's penn210 and #9. a few big spinners from when i didn't know how to use a bait cast. 5 33's for small ponds and creeks. several ultra lights and spinners in the med range and a few for the kid. im in the lookout soon for a berkly glow stick and a new abu to stick on her. as well as an antique 5000 from the 50's. :)

I dont think there is such a thing as too many as long as you arent regretting getting them all LOL. I have one big game rod (Tidewater reel and Mudville Catmaster rod) two smaller cat rods (Shakespeare SKP2000S and Sigma BCB on a Quantum Torsion and Rhino Indestructible) and an old spinning reel that is of questionable quality that my grandma gave me. My brother has one ultralight triggerspin reel, and another "ultralight" cheap rod and reel. A medium action spinner for bass and crappie. My mom has a nice little outfit that would be good for bass and small cats. So overall, my mom complains that I have too many, but she lets me get more, and they arent all mine LOL. I am hoping to get another one here when the clearance goes on for all the fishing equipment, like hawghunter was going to do, too.

I wonder if someone says "you have too many fishing rods" if they are a real fisherman.
    Different strokes for different folks.
    Different tools for different jobs.
You can NEVER have too many.
    You MIGHT have enough.
No, I change my mind on that. I want more. I'm satisfied with what I have but I'll get more.

    whatever it takes

I posed this question to a famous Santee fishing guide one day while we were waiting for a bite.He thought about it for a minute and his answer has stuck with me ever since.Keep in mind I asked the question in the context of fishing not overall possession. He said "If the fish are really biting two is to many,if they ain't twenty aren't enough".Fair enough ! I have so many rods and reels that I couldn't actually tell you because I have fished so many different places ie flyrods for trout fishing, surf rods etc etc etc.As if that wasn't enough I pulled up a brand new outfit while bait fishing in the canal at Santee a month ago.It was a Amb.6500C baitcasting outfit completely rigged.Since I am a spinning guy I gave it to an 11 year old fishing from the dock at Harrys with a Zebco 33.He was very happy to get it.

I only have about 10 rods and reels on the boat.
2 ultra lights for catching bait.
3 spin cast that the wife mostly uses
    3 bait cast
    2 spinning

Of course I don't use all of them them at the same time but it is comforting to know that there are spares on board should something happen.
