I ask this question because i caught my first gar this week. He was three, and one half ft. long, a dull metal colar, with yellow fins, with black stripes on the fins.

The main species of gar are the Alligator...the largest, Long-nose, the next , Spotted, and short nose. The Alligator gar gets up to and over 300 lbs, the record for rod and reel long nose is just over 50 lbs, the others are around 5-6 lbs. Alligator gar have short, blunt snout, much like an alligator's in shape, the longnose is more pike like and narrow, the spotted and shortnose, from photos I've seen have shorter shnouts, not particularly narrow or long.
