From what i've read, males have a sort of a bump on their anal than females do.I tried comparing but didn't notice much of a difference. There was a tiny hump on some, and i always assume these are the males.

Usually the best way to determine the difference is females will usually carry a purse!

Without killing them don't know. When you clean them you can tell on the males they will have sprem skeens and females I'm not sure I haven't seen the egg skeens. When it's not spawning season the skeens are there but really small skinny and short. during the spawn it's easy to tell when gutting the skeens are as big around as a fifty cent piece and real long. Still haven't seen the eggs.

i dont know about flats or blues, but in channel cats the male is a blueish gray and the female is a olive to brown color.

Received this reply from a TN fisheries biologist.

    Mr. McClendon,

Sexually mature Male and Female catfish may be distinguished best
during the spawning season as follows:

    Males:
    - male genitalia stands out slightly with an opening only at the rear
(below the anus opening). Opening area is similar to a raised fleshy
    nipple.
    - male usually darker than female (especially under jaw and body) and
male has muscular head that is wider than body.

    Females:
    - female genitals have a more pronounced groove surrounded by higher
skin folds (below the anus opening) that is usually raised and

    reddish.
    - female has well-rounded abdomen (check before feeding - a hard
feeling abdomen is possibly full of food).
    - female head not usually muscular head and narrower than the body.

To help you in how to determine to sex of catfish, I have provided a
link below to a publication that provides more information and pictures
about this subject on pages 3 & 4.

    I hope all this helps.

Stick your finger in that hole ; if it's a male, he'll squirm and try and bite your head off ; if it's a female, she'll smile :D

You know guys I can't believe this is that difficult!!! What I do is on half the lines I fish with I put one of those plastic ID card holders with a clip above my swivel.Inside I put a card that says "SHAD SALE!!! 50% OFF" or if the bite is slow "FREE SHAD".All the catfish that I catch on those lines are Females. The others on the lines without the cards are males!!!!!.How do you think the devil got Eve to eat the Apple? He put a bucket of apples out with a sign that said "APPLE SALE 12 FOR A DOLLAR".We were kicked out of the Garden of Eden by the next day.SHEEEEEESH do I have to explain everything?????

look at the anus area. if theres one hole its a male and if theres two holes its a female. its that easy.
