I was just wondering how you properly way a catfish. I see it done through the mouth and through the gills. I was just wondering which is better for catch and release? I don't keep any fish.

    Thanks,
    Josh

heres what i do if it is a small one i usually dont weigh them that often
but if he is bigger i will either put the scale hook at the V where the gills come together at the base of the head on the bottom side or if he aint too big i will just stick the scale hook in the fish hook hole and weight them out of that hole,

but usually it is at the base of the gills on the bottom side of a cat

if u catch a cat just flip it over and u will see a backwards V(depending on how ur holding it) and just stick the scale hook there

    hope this helps

Just make sure you don't get into the actual gills. That can really mess up the fish and keep it from living much longer.

That little V is the place to go, and like Taliesin said, don't actually grab the gills with the hook from the scale.

i always weigh my fish in a net and subtract my tare weight from my net. this way there is no damage done to fish or tearing of lip or gills

EXCATLY!!!!!!!!!! When you weigh the fish in Your landing net you are able to support the entire fish and I feel you have much less risk of damage to the gills or internal organs.

plus when you get into those bigger fish they are very easy to bust there air pockets. and that will kill a nice blue or flatheads in minutes.

I also use a landing net I take the handle off & weigh it. My net weighs 1 lbs. empty.
