We are looking to try and built a couple of homemade anchors for a 32' pontoon boat. It seems that Santee Cooper is eating our anchors and we wanted to get a couple extras to keep on the boat. We have lost one on our last two trips. Any suggestions on a good homemeade anchor that will work in current and wind would be appreciated.

These are the anchors I use for my 22' Deck Boat. I use them in the James and Appomatox rivers, have no problems hooking and holding in current. I won the the big 30LB wreck anchor at a forum gathering and I use the 30LB black river anchor for my rear anchor, I never use the rear anchor in heavy current or in water over 30'

I use homemade wreck anchors almost exclusively. They don't need to be heavy. And it's nearly impossible to lose one. I get mine snagged on purpose sometimes to make sure it holds. Yank on it, break the wire ties and it comes up bottom first. I'll post a pic of one to show you how they work. The chain is attached at the bottom, and wire tied at the top. Make sure you leave slack in the chain between the wire tie on the top, and the bottom of the anchor so the tie will break as needed. The one pictured is made of 1 1/2 pipe with 3/8'ths bar stock for the claws. also I ended up putting a longer chain on this one. the longer chain helps the claws stay down so they can dig in.

go to the junk yard and look for a bare engin block already striped no pistons no nothing just the block look @ the 4 cylender blocks and see if thats to heavy for you and also we use cinder blocks and fill the empty space in the block with a bag of concrete and insert an eye bolt and if you have rebar you can cut some and insert in to the wet cement with the help of your imagination you can angle the rebar so it digs in the ground both can be cheap and efective ... and also some people here use the heads of a old v8 just clean all the oil off the engin parts gl
