I would go with an eight ft Meathunter. Maybe some of the others will know of a good rod in that price range.

I like the American spirit nite sticks, they are very good rods for the money, I have 3 myself.

Jay its hard to beat a white ugly stik catfish series in that price range.Walmart has them around here in the $30 or less range.Thats sure not the only good ones but it is a good rod for the money.

Add $15 to that and get an Ugly Stick Tiger in Med/Hvy, after all you live in Festus, MO, I know you'll be fishing the Mississippi.

Might try a Penn Mariner or Beefstick plus I have a 7' mariner and a 6.5' beefstick plus. I think the mariner was cheaper both are pretty good, I don't know how they compare to the ugly sticks but you should be able to compare them at wallmart.

If you're wanting to stay in the $40 range, try to find a rod locally instead of having one shipped to you. By the time you pay shipping, that $40 rod is going to cost you anywhere from $50 on up (unless you can get free shipping).

I'd just as soon pay $50 for a $50 rod instead of paying $50 for a $40 rod and the box it goes in.

The only time I have rods shipped is if I'm buying more than one. The same box that's going to be used for 1 rod will hold 3 or 4 rods and it won't cost much more to ship. Just a thought.

    What stores are near you?

Try the TROPH-E-CAT from Catfish connection in MED/HVY TO HVY since you'll be fishing current. $32.95 is the price.:cool2:

I bought some of the ugly stick a walmart, and broke 2 of them the first trip out, they are made in China now, not the usa, they will replace them but you pay shipping. any way you might consider that, check some garage sales or people that deal with used like pawn shop or swap n shop if you have one, maybe craigslist good luck:wink:
