I had a friend of mine, tear off the reel foot of his Abu 6500.. I didn't ask him a bunch of questions about it,, however,, I had him send it to me, and,, I installed a new frame for him,,
Then, I took both pieces of his reel, the frame body and the reel foot, and did a bit of work in my shop today, and ended up with this reel..
The main repair, consisted of using 4-40 countersunk Flathead screws and screwing the reel foot back onto the frame body,,
Then ,, I had some Real Nice 5600 WS sideplates here,, and ,, I cut a slot into the left sideplate and made it ready for , and, installed a Bait clicker,, and since the sideplates were designed for a thumbar style frame, I cut the pushbutton relief on the right sideplate,,
The Soft Touch Power Handle on his reel was ,,, hmmm, messed up, so, I straightened it out, and used it on this project..
While I was at it,, I scrounged around in my accumulation of parts, and, installed an intermediate gear w/ bearing, worm gear w/ bearing, and, ceramic pawl and carbon drags as well...Kind of a C5 ,, I guess. It's got the spool bearings as well as IAR, and also the Anti-Reverse Dog.. so, redundant anti reverse!!!
anyhow,, Since I should've been fishing,and,am not,,,,,,,,,,,, this, seems like a worthy project on a Saturday!!
I went ahead and beefed up the new frame with the screw enhancement on my friends reel, as I don't know what the heck he does with them... Belt and suspenders!!!
