I've had good success with gill heads on a carolina rig. As far as I'm concerned ya can fish them any way ya want. If theres a channel in the neighborhood its gonna take it. LOL!
Ol George is right fish them any way you want.
i fish with them all the time, the biggest cats ive caught this year have been on bluegill heads.Yeah you can use them anyway you want to the kitties love them.
thats the main bait my uncle uses and he catches 5-10lb channels.
Not to long ago i saw someone take the head of a fish. Not a bluegill it was a perch. I thought to myself this isnt going to work. Within 5 minutes he had major rod bending going on. Ten minutes later he caught the biggest channel i personally seen. Just food for thought.

I don't waste any of my bluegills. I use the head and the scaled body and do just fine with either one. I usually hook the head through the eyes although if it is small enough you can just shove the hook through anywhere. I prefer the other half of the bluegill though, especially scaled for some reason seems to work great. I use the heads last, but I have caught alot of channels on the heads. I think those channels will eat anything anyway and it just depends on the day as to what they are more likely to take. Just take a look at the threads in the bait section here and on the old site. Hundreds of different ideas and everybody has a bait that they swear by. I haven't heard of anything that they won't eat except maybe for some of this manufactured dough bait you pay 5 or 6 bucks for at Wal-Mart, lol. Anyway, heads do work just fine.
I agree with wills. cats will eat anything. so give it a try. but keep the other half for dinner
:)
ive caught channed drifting with gill heads. iv'e used shad more than gills but seems like they hit the gutpocket 3times to the heads for some reason. but ya they work. i use the carolina rig most of the time as well. it proves successful.

cj, save the rest for dinner. lmao.
I have had decent luck on blue gill heads, but for the most part I have had the best luck on the middle section. Big Cats Like The GUTS!! Like I have said before, you have to be careful cause this can often attract every turtle in the river.. Good Luck Fishin Brothers!!
I've had better luck with gill heads, but they will hit the gut pockets as well.
I have use both the head and gut pack of gills and shad with good results. My one observance is that I usually get less hits on the head but but my hook up ratio is better and the fish are larger.
ive had really good luck using blugill heads on kahle hooks,i always keep my bluegills. My question is can you use those heads on circle hooks?and if you can what size is best and where do you hook the head?I know with kahles i hook them either through the eyes or through the mouth.

Yes you can use them with circle hooks. 0/4 - 0/6 should do the trick in most cases, hook them just like you do with your Kahles. Just make sure there is room in the gap and the point of the hook is NOT inbeded in the gill.
I have good luck with the gill heads and also cut up shad works great too.

Yeah, it wasnt until this year that i was made a believer on white perch. Awesome big cat bait. Ive caught 40lbers on 2inch white perch...Unreal...
for my money there is nothing better than a good sized gill head with a 6/0 gamma circle through the eyes. hooks the big cats every time.
It is interesting that everyone but me seems to have great results on bluegill parts or whole. Where I fish the channel cats seem to ignore it. I'll fish chicken liver on one rod and 'gill (whole or parts) on on another. Rarely any action on the 'gill but plenty on the liver. The liver outfishes the 'gill by about 20 to 1. So I've stopped using the 'gill. However I guess that with colder weather starting I'll give the bluegill a winter test. Maybe what I've seen is only a warm weather thing.
