That fish, the Mekong catfish, is the largest of at least 3 species. There is also the Striped catfish and the Chao Pharya giant catfish, which are closely related, but don't get quite as big as the Mekong.
last year's catfish insider had a deal about a guy going to thailand fishing for those and other thai species. they said the mekong cats are vegetarians, and they use softball-sized wheaties balls dipped in milk for bait. i read also that most of them, like thie big one in the national geographic article you posted, are caught in nets.
