It started raining a little about the time I got off work, but it wasn't cold. I stopped at the Roanoke river near my house and was casting a small Panther Martin spinner, on my 5th or 6th cast something nailed it. It was an 11 pound brown trout, the state does not even stock this area of the river. It was a hell of a fight on an ultra light with 4 # line. It's the biggest trout I've ever caught by a long shot.

Great fish, Riverdawg. Very good photos, too. Thanks for sharing. Where along the Roanoke River were you? How long do you think that big brown has been there? It's got to be a hold-over from a stocking several years ago. When during the fight did you realize it was a trout and not a smallmouth? I can imagine how tough the fight must have been on ultralight gear. Great job!

I was in Salem between 2 spots that they stock. I was using a small Panther Martin and at first thought I had snagged a carp. In the last few years I've caught several nice,4-6 pound, rainbows in the river, but thats's the biggest trout I've ever caught. Last year in almost the same area I caught 5 pound rainbow throwing a tube for smallies from the canoe.

Al, good to hear from you. Yeah let's go fishing. I've been hitting some of the stocked trout creeks, but thats about it. As soon as it starts to warm up a little, I've got several places on the James to try. Also in the next few weeks Walleye should be running around Allisonia on upper New. I have a small gas outbouard for the jon boat now. I've never fished up that way, but the walleye fisdhing is supposed to be good Feb- March.
