Headed out on Watts Bar Lake early this morning. Anchored up at 4:50 am and had a bite at 5:10 am, nice 10lb blue. Some 20 minutes later I hooked up on a 7lb blue. These were caught in a 62’ deep spot I like to fish where a creek dumps into the original river channel at the end of a long bend. I was using cut bluegill and small gizzard shad. The main purpose of the trip was to give my trolling motor a test run as I had been having trouble with it. I also wanted to try out a set of planer boards I had just made. I re-tied for some dragging rigs using the Santee Cooper setup. Headed up out of the hole I was fishing to a ledge that mirrored the outside bend of the main channel. As soon as I made it up on the ledge, roughly 30’ deep, I hooked up on a 22.5lb blue. 200 yards later I caught a 14.9lb blue, then roughly 200 yards even further I caught a very dark 29lb blue. All of these were caught on cut bluegill in around 30-35’ of water. I caught a total of 9 fish, the smallest three were less than a pound. I still can’t figure out how they can get the bait and a 8/0 hook in their mouth, but they did. All in all it was a great day. Weather was perfect, boat ran great, trolling motor worked flawlessly, planer boards worked good but need a bit of tweaking. Had a great time. Just wanted to share.
