Figured I would just start a new thread. I got inspected yesterday too.Who inspected you was it the US coast guard or the US power squadron.

I got stopped by the power squadron for routine inspection. He was all dolled up with the coast guard patches but I noticed he was with power squadron. I am usually pretty nice when I deal with people but this time I was in a hurry, (had no where to go but just did'nt want to deal with him).

He first asked for registration, well did'nt have that.
Then asked for me to read him the hull # I told him he would have to read them because they were under water.
Checked life jackets and I showedd him one, he asked to see the rest I was by myself and told him that so I did'nt have to dig anymore out.
Then checked flares, it was probably 5 years outdated atleast.
Then wanted to check lights, Its daylight he was told and I was'nt plugging battery in just to turn lights on.
Ok I'm getting irritated at him now...
Checked for fire extinguisher, told me he thought it was outdated because he could'nt hear anything inside. I told him to buy me a new one and he could pull the trigger to see if it would shoot.
Checked anchor and rope
wanted to see bilge pump
check to see if battery terminal was covered.
Also by him checking I mean I had to show him everything while he stoof there.
He asked for a few more things and told me a list of stuff I need to have in boat just in case. Then he tells me it voluntary inspection and he can't do anything anyway.
Well see ya later as he handed me my inspection report that I failed but had everything I needed in boat by law. Just failed the stuff the reccomend I carry..Ha

Shad man I hope this was'nt the guy that ran you home, cause I don't think he can....

I only got checked once. It was the for real Coast Guard and there were four of 'em in a Zodiac fully armed. They were extremely nice and polite and said to be sure we went and got a whistle before we came back out.

You have to have a flare in your boat???? First I've heard of that. I've been checked I don't know how many times by CO's and they just ask for registration and life jackets and fire ext... Just the basic three or four things with a license. But the guy's that check me I kind of know so guess they have never checked me for everything. Don't know if I would have put up with 20 questions.

I got the same treatment but not from this guy from the Coast Guard out on the water in the big boat. Then when I came in the same guy you are talking about tried to give me another one. Thats when I shoved the inspection sheet in his face, told him they already got me on the water and then jumped in the truck and drove up almost to McDonald's to strap down my boat so he would leave me alone. My decals will be securely attached when I come down this week.

I guarantee you they didn't have ammo issued for those firearms.LOL.
I work with a Coastie. That crap pisses him off.

If you were lucky the officer of the boat might have a loaded sidearm.
The rifles?
Intimidation. Makes people more ready to heed and comply.

The fire extinguisher isn't there to put out your gas tank.
It's to put out a fire before it spreads to the gas tank.
Like a dashboard fire.
Wiring in the engine catching fire.

But I get your point. I'm fire trained and certified at work.
If an office catches fire, I'm not standing there and fight a hopeless cause with a fire extinguisher because there aint a damn thing in that office worth dying for.

As tedious as it might be to cooperate with these guys, it really does pay to be nice to them as they can turn your day on the river into a nightmare if you piss them off.
Like the police, customs inspectors, fire marshals etc. they get paid whether they are doing something important or just making you wish you had not smart-mouthed off to them. Even if you know they are wrong, or they are being officious, it pays to deal with them courteously.

Yeah usually I can be calm in the presence of the LAW but after a 20 minutes of it I kinda had enough. Especially since I had just spent over $100 on the safety stuff at walmart. I just don't understand why they would be so interested in recommended stuff (marine radio, first aid kit etc.). Next time I will just bite my tongue until they are done.

marine radio could come in handy for many reasons (severe weather, boat sinking, medical emergency, dead motor in chanel w/barge present, locking thru at dams or talking fish with other buddies on the water) if cell phone coverage worked as well as they claim, there would be no need for one, but cell service sucks!

first aid kit!!! well thats pretty self explainatory

on lake michigan you can volentarily take your boat into the coasties to inspect, if it passes they give you a sticker to display visibly on the boat, you will no longer be bothered by them the rest of the year....i'm curious if they do that for the ohio river

Yeah when I was back in Ohio I used to get my old boat inspected to get one of those stickers so they would leave me alone. Im woriing on Lake Michigan this summer and their is a coast guard station 1/8 mile away. I am definately going to get that sticker.

It's all about control. Most of these bozo's get their jolly's bossing other people around. Pure and simple. That's why they do it. There are a lot of nice people doing those jobs, but there is just as many who's only joy in life is wearing a badge so they can get a little attention. I dunno, maybe they were ignored as a kid or something.

I have respect for the Law as long as they act respectable. When they start acting like jerks, all respect goes out the window. I still have a few rights left and I don't aim to let some wannabe screw with 'em.

I think I would have told those Power Squadron bozo's thanks, but no thanks, go check someone else, I don't have the time. I had a run in with one on the Texas Coast once, boy he thought his crap didn't stink a bit! LOL I told him when he get's some real authority, come back and we'll talk. He face got as red as a beet!
