American ginseng, Panax quinquefolium, is a woodland herb that grows throughout the East, from Maine to the Carolinas and across Georgia, Alabama and Mississipi to the eastern borders of Kansas and Nebraska. It thrives in rich, humusy soil that drains well, and it needs shade. (It is not to be confused with Chinese ginseng, or Panax ginseng, which is native to Asia and cultivated widely in Korea.)
