Man that's bad!
When I catch them I grap them by the gills and rap a rope around their long nose so that don't happen.
I hope you get well quick that had to hurt Man.

all i've ever seen were long nose and spotted gar in ga.,but you can catch flats and blues where there is supposed to be none.maybe there are some,it would be cool to have a potential 300 pounder swimming around our rivers though.

Not to be controversial, as Im still learning my species and territories of em, but I thought alligator gar were found around Miss/Texas area.
Acording to Jeramy Wade "monstrer fish on TV" if you draw a line from NY to the top of TX everything east of there used to be there range but we killed them off in the late 1800-early 1900 , so I think it posable there are still some running around inside that area,,, Im pritty sure I saw some below the Nickajack Dam "TN river" one night...

Hope you hand gets better quick...

hope your hand heels fast.
keep a pair of cheap leather gloves on board your boat, they come in handy for times like that..... by the way, put them teeth under your pillow and maybe the tooth fairy will leave some new hooks for you...or maybe a new pair of leather gloves...lol

Down here on the Chattahoochee below the Bluff Creek area there are three types of gar long nose, spotted and the third one we call the alligator gar.
I'm not sure if it is and I've only seen and caught small ones 2 to 3 ft but the mouths on these fish is about 3 to 4 inches wide all the way to the tip.
There was a article in the news paper a couple of years ago that there was a 6ft alligator gar seen at the dam in Columbus. I've seen a lot of 6ft gar at the dam but they looked like long nose gar to me.

OK, they are in the Texas freshwater museum. I went to see "Splash" the 121 lb blue a few years ago and also enjoyed seeing the Alligator gar. There were other types too. If you are near Dallas, the trip is worthwhile. Hannibal Mike
