I usually hate reposting e-mails on here, but this one is actually relevant and interesting. I have no idea where this happened, but I'd love to find out. :p

A resident in the area saw a ball bouncing around kind of strange in a nearby pond and went to investigate.

It turned out to be a flathead catfish who had obviously tried to swallow a child's basketball which became stuck in its mouth!!

The fish was totally exhausted from trying to dive, but unable to because the ball would always bring him back up to the surface. The resident tried numerous times to get the ball out, but was unsuccessful. He finally had his wife cut the ball in order to deflate it and release the hungry catfish.

You probably wouldn't have believed this, if you hadn't seen the following pictures...

yeah I have seen this other places online, it is pretty neat what they would eat and think would be appetizing when they are hungry.

Yes, I'm remember the story. The small lake in question is only a few miles from my home in a subdivision called "Lakewood". This is in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The incident occurred in June of 2004. It's just conjecture, but a kid's ball left overnight, floating & bobbing on the surface may have resembled something to eat. In this case the flathead may have bit off more than could be chewed.

I am not surprised. I had gone bream fishing in the canal behind my house when I was younger and I was gettin the worm dirt off my hand in the water. I was on a little barge and just stuck my hand in the water to wash it and felt something funny bump my hand. My neighbor I was fishing with said "LOOK AT THAT CAT"....by that time I had yanked my hand out fast enough to see a MOUTH. YES, that fish was going to try to EAT ME! I guess my wriggling fingers looked like worms or something.

A flathead that big in a 1 acre lake, that guy is gonna want to go after him after that flatty destroys rest of the fish population in that lil lake.
