I was wondering if the flathead bite is going to start to die down since the water temps are rising? Figured i wouldnt bother this weekend if they were starting to spawn

They are going to start spawing very soon if not already. Does not mean that you will not catch fish. last year at this same time I caught 10 in 3 days. Fish are still going to eat. Just not going to be as active.

I asked the same question last week. I went on Sunday and caught 5 in a half day. Nothing was big, but they were flats. I'm going all weekend again and I believe the spawn is in full swing. GOOD LUCK! P.S. Don't forget that the female involvement in the spawn is very brief and they will be feeding long before the males are ready to come off the beds.

The spawn out our way has already happened but I do realize the temps in Illinois is startinf to warm up as of now so the spawn will be much later. You will still be able to get flats. Even in the spawn you have to keep in mind that not all flats will be spawning at the same time. Some will be in pre spawn mode, spawn mode, and posy spawn mode. Generally you will get the pre and the post spawn cats the most of the time when you are fishing. So the bite is never completely shut down during the spawning periods. Similar to many other habitats across the country you will find that the shallow water areas between 5 and 8 feet will be ideal areas to fish at this time where there is low current and an abundance of vegetation and baitfish at for them to smack on.
