Without cutting it open, I cant tell you? I wished I knew. It seems that I find eggs in females no mater the time of year. Males will have fat in place of egg sacks, and the even have a set of cahonies, down close the a-hole. You must look close to find them. It comes with seeing the inside of many of the to find them fast. I try to guess the sex before I do the deed. I am getting better at determining sex at the shape of the body, but cannot explain the difference as of yet. 95 % of the fish, I catch that end up in the skillet are female. I release what I cant eat so it is just a guessing game, untill I get more experiance. I caught a 40 pounder last week that was a male. It is the biggest male I have come across in 15 years. Before that it was only 18 pounds.
