I dont keep a journal anymore, but I know I cant catch flatheads this time of year from the spawn.

Last night I went over many pages Of a journal I kept for 17 years.

I found a few interesting things.

1- I had 0 entries from appx mid June till mid July, thats why I dont get to excited about fishing right now.

2- August has been my best month for big flatheads, followed closley by september.

3- catch rates went way down starting in mid October, but the fishing could be very good for just a few hrs a day.

4- during years of little rain, may had the best number of flatheads, but not the biggest.

5- the latest in the year I ever caught a flathead was December 3rd.

6- New moon periods were best for nite fishing.

7- full moon periods were good for day fishing.

Jack you have NEVER caught a flathead of any size during this time period? In 17 years I find that hard to believe unless you do not fish at all during those 4 weeks.

We were out Friday night and caught 5 under 10 pounds. I hooked a good one that broke my line also.

I also dont like fishing for flats during the spawn, my best month is september instead of August for big flats and also would like to note during those two months a person can catch quite a few large flats. Very good post.

Chris, I might have caught a few in that time frame, just did not have them entered...But mainly I dont fish much in that 4 week period because of poor past results.
