I was a little shaver and my grandfather had a willow pole with about 30 feet of staging on it. He had 2 nails about 6 inches apart that was used to wrap line on. My first trip with him to river , he unwound his (reel) and told me to take off with it. I did as I was told and when I got to end of line he told me to throw it as far as I could towards other bank. I arched a beauty and he looked at me and said "Man that was the best cast I ever made" I just grinned!!

He was fishing for flatheads. I seen his hands get "string burned" more than once from hand lining the line in. He didnt fish for sport he fished to keep families fed.

Thanks for sharing good memories. I have seen my dad when i was younger using the old bottle filled it with rocks(line out alarm and for added weight) type of fishing. Or him using a bamboo stick for fishing lol........ Of course he doesn't do that any longer or fish much for whatever reason....
