I think it's more a matter of water conditions than any certain time. This year we had a lot of high water and cool temps in the spring. That led to a longer prespawn, my favorite time to flathead fish. Then the water dropped and and warmed up so fast it threw fish off. I was catching spawning flats into late July this year. Seemed like once the spawn was done most of the flats either went missing or prefered to not bite. The bite was still there but you had to work for it.
Another reason I say depends on water conditions is difference in locations. Here in NW Ohio we warm up later than southern Ohio and cool down sooner so what works there works here just at different times.

i am not very productive catching flats,so that means that my favorite time to just go fishing,is,well, just about anytime.

but,if i can get out on a lake,in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but the sounds of nature, and no cars or human related thing is not heard,i would rather be there.nice, quiet and solitude, don't care if i catch one fish, that is the best in my book.
